about

Muwieri Xaure (also known as Eusebio López in Spanish) is a longstanding traditional Wixárika musician and former leader of the community of La Laguna, San Andrés Cohamiata. The Wixáritari (plural of Wixárika) are indigenous to the Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range in Northwestern Mexico and have existed there for over 15,000 years. In that time they have developed a rich cultural tradition, in which "hikuri" (commonly called peyote in Spanish) plays a central role as a medicine and spiritual teacher. In this rare recording, Muwieri Xaure presents us with a new collection of original songs that unify the musical traditions of his native San Andrés and Santa Catarina while also expressing his relationship with Mextiza and Mexican culture.

Like so many indigenous cultures, the Western constructs of modernity and progress have placed the Wixárika's ancient practices at risk of extinction. Each year, the tribes make monumental pilgrimages on foot to sacred sites that have been passed down through generations of ancestors, where they perform healing rites with the hikuri plant. The encroachment of large mining corporations and other business interests has seen their consecrated lands being sold off to private entities and exploited for their resources, making their pilgrimages increasingly difficult and threatening the endemic plant and animal species with which their heritage is intertwined.

Recently in December of 2020, following Wixárika tradition, Eusebio hosted a three-day ceremony to pass on his leadership position of the La Laguna. He has held this position for the last two years, managing and manifesting many benefits in their community such as public lighting, construction of a tiled roof and a communal kitchen in the police station, and the building of a hydraulic concrete road. Muwieri made this album for you to enjoy this traditional music from his heart and hopes that you will support him in fulfilling the many responsibilities that surrendering his position implies.
